Silent Speedways of the Carolinas is a history of Grand National races at tracks in the Carolinas that no longer are used for auto racing. Perry Allen Wood researched, and visited each of the 29 silent Grand National tracks that held races between 1950 and 1971. Also included in this 298 page book are nearly 150 photos, many of which show the present condition of these long forgotten historic tracks.

*** Old News  ***

Marty Little recently had a chance to ask Herb Tillman about the history behind the "Sweet 16" he drove in the early 60's. Marty's comments confirming another part of race history are below. A photo of Herb's #16 is in the Rambi Photo area, and one of Bobby's #312 is in the Classic Photo area.

Jack, I spoke with Herb tonight and with things calmed down had a chance to ask about your sedan question. Guess what......absolutely true. Here's the story. Herb and car owner Joe Chambliss had found a 1936 Chevy coupe they were going to build to go north with and run NASCAR. Bobby had the Chevy sedan he'd run during the 1959-60 seasons (I think) and wanted a coupe because it was a bit lighter. Herb and Bobby traded cars (and probably some cash too) as both Herb and Joe worked construction and it would shorten the time needed to get a car ready to go racing. One unique feature that the car had was quarter eliptic rear springs which Bobby always had success with over time with many cars. Herb didn't really have any great memory of the Rambi run but his over recall is very good and he just turned 76 on Saturday night. So, another piece of history confirmed. Marty
