Good Ol' Sonny
We all say good-by to one of the legendary "4-H Boys" in short track racing, Sonny Hutchins (w/Rut Harris, Ray Hendricks and Ted Haiefield). Sonny left the track for good 11/21/05 at age 76. Sonny always had something to say and we all liked listening to him as well as watching him attack the track with his well regarded lead foot for 30 years in Late Models, Modifieds and Winston Cup. Sonny is often credited with influencing Dale Earnhardt's "aggressive" style of driving. He did after all bump The Intinitator into the wall on back to back Late Model races in Richmond and Martinsville. He thought the most fun thing to do in racing was to "show up at someone elses racetrack and beating them." Sonny drove Junie Donlavey's #90 from 1965-70 finishing 7th at Daytona 500 in '67 and 2nd at Dover and Richmond in '69. Dunlavey says Sonny always drove to the limit and never held back anything.
